Customer paying with Nepal QR at a merchant in Nepal

Nepal QR confuses people because three different things share similar names: NepalQR standards from Nepal Rastra Bank, NEPALPAY QR implemented by Nepal Clearing House (NCHL) under the National Payment Switch, and each bank or wallet app's own scan-and-pay feature.

This guide separates the three layers, then shows exactly how customers pay, how merchants receive money, how to verify support before you depend on it, and what to do when a payment fails. DigitalNepal.tech is independent and not affiliated with NRB, NCHL or any bank or wallet.

Steps

  1. 1Understand the three QR layers

NepalQR is NRB's standardisation framework for interoperable QR. NEPALPAY QR is NCHL's implementation of those standards as part of the National Payment Switch - an independent QR scheme allowing interoperability at merchant and network level. Bank and wallet QRs are each provider's own feature, which may or may not ride the interoperable rail. Never assume every app scans every QR.

  2. 2Pay as a customer in 4 checks

Open your bank or wallet app, tap Scan QR, and scan the merchant's code. Before confirming, verify the merchant name shown on your screen matches the shop, check the amount, confirm with PIN or biometrics, and save the success receipt with its transaction ID.

  3. 3Receive as a merchant the right way

Enrol for a merchant QR through your bank or payment provider (NCHL offers a merchant enrolment request path) so settlement lands in your linked account. Display one printed QR per counter, reconcile daily against the settlement report, and never rely on a customer's screenshot alone.

  4. 4Verify support before you depend on it

Support changes as members join. Check inside your own app whether NEPALPAY or NepalQR acceptance is listed, and read your bank's current notice. Shop stickers alone prove nothing - test with a small payment first.

  5. 5Handle failed payments and disputes

If money left your account but the merchant says unpaid, keep the transaction ID, check your statement after the settlement window, then raise a dispute with your own bank or wallet helpdesk including screenshot, time and amount. Get a complaint number in writing and follow the provider's dispute cycle for refunds.

Good to know: Never scan a QR sent over messages to 'receive' money - that is the classic reversal scam. Real incoming payments need no scan, OTP or PIN from you. Confirm payee name and amount on-screen every time, and keep transaction alerts on.
