ATM and Card Safety: Skimmers, PINs and Failed Cash

Use any ATM safely, shield your PIN, and handle cash-not-dispensed cases correctly.

By DigitalNepal · Updated 2026-10-04

ATM fraud is physical: fake keypads, hidden cameras and shoulder surfers. Five habits plus knowing the failed-cash drill covers nearly everything.

Steps

  1. 1Inspect before inserting

Wiggle the card slot and keypad cover. Loose, bulky or mismatched parts mean walk away.

  2. 2Shield every PIN entry

Cover with your whole hand, every time, even with nobody around. Cameras hide in brochures and ceilings.

  3. 3Prefer bank-branch ATMs

On-premise machines with cameras and guards are far safer than lonely roadside ones at night.

  4. 4Handle failed cash calmly

If debited but no cash: keep the slip, note machine ID, time and amount, and report to your bank immediately - auto-reversals take a few working days.

  5. 5Set card limits

Lower daily ATM and online limits to your real needs in the app. Smaller blast radius if compromised.

Good to know: Check SMS alerts after every ATM visit. Unknown debits reported within hours recover far more often.
