How to Set Up Free HTTPS on a Website (Zero-Cost SSL)
Cloudflare, host-provided certs and Let's Encrypt paths compared simply.
By DigitalNepal · Updated 2026-10-04
HTTPS is free everywhere now via three paths: CDN-provided, host-provided, or Let's Encrypt on your server.
Steps
1Easiest: Cloudflare Full
Proxy DNS through Cloudflare with SSL Full. Certificate appears with zero server work.
2Host one-click SSL
Vercel, Render, GitHub Pages and most hosts issue certs automatically on custom domains.
3Server path: Let's Encrypt
On VPS, use Certbot with auto-renewal timers. Test renewal with dry-run.
4Fix mixed content
After HTTPS, update hardcoded http:// images, scripts and links or browsers warn.
Good to know: Renewal monitoring matters more than issuance. Expired certs take sites down harder than no cert ever did.
FAQ
