Google Account Recovery: Get Back Into Gmail Step by Step
Locked out of Gmail or your Google account? Recover it through google.com with the highest chance of success.
By DigitalNepal · Updated 2026-09-15
Google decides recovery using signals like your usual device, location and recovery options. Attempt recovery from a device and Wi-Fi you have used before, and answer every question as best you can.
Steps
1Go to the official recovery page
Visit accounts.google.com/signin/recovery in a browser and enter your email address.
2Try your last remembered password
Enter the most recent password you remember - even an old one helps prove ownership.
3Use your recovery phone or email
Accept the verification code on your recovery number or secondary email.
4Answer ownership questions
Questions about account creation month or frequent contacts help. Guessing reasonably is better than skipping.
5If it fails, wait and retry
Too many failed attempts temporarily block recovery. Wait 24 hours and try again from your usual device.
Good to know: Nobody from 'Google support' will call you asking for codes. Google recovery is fully self-service through its website.
FAQ
