Pendrive Not Detected? Recover Access Step by Step
USB drive not showing on Windows. Diagnose whether it is the port, the drive letter, or a dead drive.
By DigitalNepal · Updated 2026-09-15
Undetected pendrives are usually driver glitches, missing drive letters, or dead flash chips. Try ports and computers before assuming data is gone.
Steps
1Try another port and computer
Use a rear motherboard USB port and test on a second computer to rule out a bad port.
2Check Disk Management
Press Win+X > Disk Management. If the drive appears without a letter, right-click > Change Drive Letter.
3Update USB drivers
In Device Manager, uninstall the unknown USB device and restart - Windows reinstalls the driver.
4Try data recovery software
If the drive shows as RAW, use reputable recovery software before formatting.
5Accept hardware death gracefully
No light, no detection anywhere, and heating up means the chip is dead - replace the drive.
Good to know: Do not format the drive before attempting recovery - formatting makes data recovery much harder.
