Your first TMS order is exciting - and where beginners lose money through market orders at bad prices. Always use limit orders at a price you choose.
Before ordering, read the market depth: the buy side (bids) and sell side (asks) show what prices others offer and in what quantities.
Steps
1Check market depth first
Open the scrip in TMS. The lowest seller price and highest buyer price show the live spread. Your order should sit sensibly inside it.
2Use a limit order, not market
Enter the exact maximum price per share you accept and the quantity. Market orders can fill at surprisingly bad prices on thin scrips.
3Calculate the true cost first
Add broker commission, SEBON fee and DP charge with the share calculator. Small orders carry proportionally higher costs.
4Place and confirm the order
Review scrip, quantity, price and order type twice, then submit. You can modify or cancel unmatched orders during market hours.
5Wait for settlement
Matched trades settle over the next working days (shares to DEMAT, money adjusted with broker). Confirm the current settlement cycle with your broker.
Good to know: Prices move every second. Decide your maximum price BEFORE opening TMS, and never chase a rising price in panic.
FAQ
Why didn't my order match?
Your price was away from the market, quantity was large versus available depth, or the session phase didn't allow matching. Adjust price or wait.
