NEPSE Beginner Guide: How Nepal's Stock Market Works

NEPSE (Nepal Stock Exchange) is where shares of listed Nepali companies are bought and sold between investors. You never trade directly with NEPSE - everything goes through a licensed stockbroker using their online system (TMS), connected to your DEMAT account and bank.

Think of it in four parts: your broker executes orders, TMS is the trading screen, DEMAT holds your shares electronically, and MeroShare handles IPO applications and holdings statements.

  1. 1. Understand the two markets: Primary market = IPOs/FPOs applied through MeroShare. Secondary market = daily buying and selling on NEPSE through a broker's TMS. Beginners usually start with IPOs, then secondary trading.
  2. 2. Know the accounts you need: DEMAT (holds shares) + MeroShare login + TMS login from a licensed broker + a bank account linked for payments (including CRN for IPO blocking).
  3. 3. Learn how a trading day works: Trading happens on working days in sessions (pre-open, continuous, closing). Exact timings change by notice, so check the current NEPSE schedule before your first order.
  4. 4. Learn price limits: NEPSE applies daily price bands (circuit breakers) so a stock can only move within a set range per day. This protects beginners from flash crashes - and caps one-day gains too.
  5. 5. Start with the calculator: Use the NEPSE buy/sell calculator on this site to see true costs: broker commission, SEBON fee and DP charge eat into small trades.
